인간은 언어적 존재이며, 인간의 핵심에는 언어가 있다. 하지만 인간만이 언어를 가진 것은 아니다. 이 세계 전체를 ‘언어의 세계’라고 이해할 수 있다. 창세기에 따르면 태초에 ‘말’이 있었다고 하며, 고대 그리스에서는 이 ‘말’이 인간의 기초가 되었다. 다시 말해 인간은 말 속에서 존재하는 것으로 이해되었다. 서양 문명뿐 아니라 동양 문명에서도 말은 인간과 밀접하게 연결되어 있다. [논어]의 마지막 구절은 ‘말을 모르고서 인간을 알 수 없다’라고 말하며, 말을 알지 못하면 인간과 세계를 이해할 수 없음을 강조한다. 이 강의에서는 인간과 세계를 이해하는 데 중요한 ‘언어’를 다양한 주제를 통해 성찰하고자 한다.

The course examines challenges in Korean-English translation for subtitles using films such as A Higher Animal, The Host, Snowpiercer, Okja, and Parasite. Students will consider linguistic, cultural, historical, and contextual factors involved in translation. Students should be at the intermediate or above level of English for this course. Previous debate skills are not required as this is an introduction to debate. In this course we also do engaging activities to have fun and build our confidence in speaking.
